Key takeaways

  • Brewing Stand — 1 Blaze Rod placed above 3 Cobblestone in a crafting grid.
  • Blaze Powder — the only fuel the stand accepts. 1 Blaze Rod crafts into 2 Blaze Powder, and each powder powers 20 brewing operations.
  • Glass bottles — 3 Glass Blocks yield 3 bottles. Fill them from any water source or a water-filled cauldron.
  • Nether Wart — found in Nether Fortress chests and in soul sand gardens. It grows on soul sand, so one harvest becomes a farm.
  • Effect ingredients — the specific item per potion, listed in the recipe table below.

To brew potions in Minecraft you need four things: a Brewing Stand, Blaze Powder for fuel, glass bottles filled with water, and Nether Wart. You turn the water bottles into Awkward Potions with the Nether Wart first, then add the effect ingredient — a Glistering Melon Slice for Healing, Magma Cream for Fire Resistance, Sugar for Swiftness, and so on. Optional modifiers come last: Redstone Dust for a longer duration, Glowstone Dust for level II potency, Gunpowder for a throwable splash potion, and Dragon’s Breath for a lingering one.

What you need before the first brew

Brewing is gated behind the Nether, and there is no way around that. Everything on this list either comes from there or exists to process what does.

Blaze Rods come from Blazes that spawn at Nether Fortress spawners, so a single spawner farm solves your fuel problem permanently. Nether Wart is the harder bottleneck early on, because a fortress run is mandatory before your first Awkward Potion.

Setting up the brewing stand, step by step

The interface has three areas: a fuel slot at the top left, an ingredient slot at the top centre, and three bottle slots along the bottom. Brewing only runs when the fuel slot is stocked, which is the single most common reason a brew silently fails.

  1. Place the stand and open it. A placed stand works anywhere, including the Overworld, and it does not need light or a specific block beneath it.
  2. Put Blaze Powder in the fuel slot. Each powder covers 20 operations, so one is usually enough for a full session.
  3. Fill all three bottom slots with water bottles. The stand processes all three slots at once, so brewing fewer than three wastes fuel and time.
  4. Add Nether Wart to the ingredient slot. This is the base step: water plus wart equals an Awkward Potion, which has no effect of its own but accepts almost every effect ingredient in the game.
  5. Wait roughly 20 seconds. The stand bubbles, then deposits three Awkward Potions. You do not have to stand there — the process continues while you do something else.
  6. Swap the wart for the effect ingredient. Glistering Melon Slice, Magma Cream, Ghast Tear, Sugar, Blaze Powder, Golden Carrot, Pufferfish, Rabbit’s Foot or Spider Eye — one per potion type, applied to all three bottles.
  7. Add a modifier if you want one. Redstone, Glowstone, Gunpowder or Dragon’s Breath goes in the same ingredient slot, one modifier per potion, and only after the effect is already locked in.

Why ingredient order matters more than anything else

Brewing is not a free-form mixing system — it is a short, ordered chain, and the stand refuses anything that does not fit it. Dropping an effect ingredient straight into a plain water bottle generally produces a useless Mundane or Thick Potion with no effect at all, which is where most beginners lose their first batch of ingredients. The Awkward Potion is the universal blank slate, and there are only a few deliberate exceptions: a Potion of Weakness is made by adding a Fermented Spider Eye directly to a water bottle, and the “corrupted” potions (Swiftness into Slowness, Night Vision into Invisibility, Healing or Poison into Harming) are made by adding a Fermented Spider Eye to an already-finished potion. You also cannot re-brew a finished potion with a different effect ingredient; the stand simply will not accept the item.

How far one Blaze Rod actually goes

Fuel is the part players most often misjudge. Per the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki brewing tables, one Blaze Powder fuels exactly 20 brewing operations, and each operation takes 20 seconds (400 game ticks). Because each operation processes all three bottle slots, that single powder can convert up to 60 bottles of water into finished potions.

Fuel input Brewing operations Bottles processed (max) Stand time
1 Blaze Powder 20 60 6 min 40 s
1 Blaze Rod (2 powder) 40 120 13 min 20 s
1 stack of Blaze Powder (64) 1,280 3,840 About 7 h 7 m

A worked example: filling a full inventory with 36 potions means 12 brews of water into Awkward plus 12 brews of Awkward into the finished effect — 24 operations, which is 1.2 Blaze Powder and about 8 minutes of stand time. In practice, a single Blaze Rod covers a long evening of play.

Recipe table: base potions and their effects

Durations below are the standard values shown in the in-game tooltips. Java and Bedrock share the same chain, though a small number of duration values and cauldron interactions differ slightly between editions, so check the tooltip in your own copy.

Upgrades: what each modifier actually does

Modifiers are added after the effect ingredient, and they are the difference between a throwaway potion and a fight-winner. A Fermented Spider Eye is itself crafted from 1 Sugar, 1 Brown Mushroom and 1 Spider Eye.

Modifier When to add it What it does Trade-off
Redstone Dust After the effect ingredient Extends duration, typically 3:00 to 8:00 Blocks Glowstone
Glowstone Dust After the effect ingredient Raises the effect to level II Shortens duration, e.g. 3:00 to 1:30
Gunpowder Last Turns the potion into a throwable splash potion The blast affects every entity in range, including you
Dragon’s Breath Last, on a splash potion Creates a lingering potion that leaves an effect cloud Anyone who walks into the cloud is affected
Fermented Spider Eye Last, on a finished potion Corrupts the effect — Swiftness to Slowness, Night Vision to Invisibility, Healing or Poison to Harming Only works on those specific potions

Redstone and Glowstone are mutually exclusive: the stand accepts one or the other, never both, so every potion is either long or strong.

Your situation Brew this Why

Ocean monuments and underwater builds Water Breathing plus Night Vision, both extended Both go from a 3:00 base to 8:00 with one Redstone each
Raids, the Wither, the Ender Dragon Healing II splash plus Strength II Instant healing can be thrown at allies; Strength II lasts 1:30
Curing zombie villagers Splash Weakness plus a Golden Apple Weakness is the one potion that skips Nether Wart entirely
